The MOBOTIX HUB is an open video management platform (VMP) for businesses of all types and sizes. It enables the integration of security and analysis cameras, access control systems, security systems, environmental sensors, software and hardware interfaces to industrial plants and many more, in a common control and user interface – centrally, clearly and user-friendly. MOBOTIX IoT cameras, like many IP cameras from other manufacturers, can be integrated into the system via device-specific drivers or via the ONVIF standard.

The flexible, scalable system is available in five different variants: from the free L1 version for small installations with up to eight cameras to the L5 variant, which enables highly distributed enterprise solutions for several thousand devices to be implemented.

The following document provides information about the system requirements, installation, and specific features of each version of MOBOTIX HUB.

MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client - New Combined media player format

The new combined media player format address the previously mentioned challenges by allowing the user to export in a new format: combined media play format.   This format creates a combined file containing all exported video sequences, one after the other, in a format playable in a normal media player application on most platforms.

MOBOTIX HUB Web Client - Auto-hide the timeline in full-screen mode

You can now auto-hide the timeline when you’re in full-screen mode to maximize your display area. The timeline is automatically hidden after five seconds of inactivity.

MOBOTIX HUB Mobile Client - for Android and iOS users

On a pro map, you can now see the new alarms associated with the cameras and view the alarms’ details… This feature is only available in certain MOBOTIX HUB VMS products. See the complete feature list, which is available on the product overview page on the MOBOTIX HUB website.

Version 2023 R2 of MOBOTIX HUB inclusive the latest Cumulative Patches 2023 R2

Published on: 2023-08-31

To install the MOBOTIX HUB, please refer to the Sections System Requirements and Important notes on installing on Windows systems Important Notes for Installation on Windows Systems. The following applies to the names of the installation files described there:

Note: For more information about the features described below, see the program's online help.

New and improved features

Adaptive Playback

The MOBOTIX HUB 2023 R2 VMS release introduces support for adaptive playback. Like adaptive streaming in live mode, adaptive playback allows recording two simultaneous video streams from the same camera, making it possible for the Desk Client to retrieve the stream with the resolution that best matches the current view size. This reduces overall network load and reduces performance requirements on the PC running Desk Client.

Video Restrictions

The MOBOTIX HUB 2023 R2 VMS release introduces support for video restrictions. With the video restrictions functionality, it is possible to limit access to certain video sequences (video, audio and device metadata) to only operators that are authorized to view restricted video. A new set of user permissions defines who can create, view, edit, and remove video restrictions.

Deploying MOBOTIX HUB VMS products with limited permissions on the SQL server

The installer UI now supports using pre-created databases during installation. This allows the MOBOTIX HUB VMS products to be installed with limited SQL server permissions towards a managed on-prem database, instead of the previously required system administrator privileges.

Adaptive View for Export

When viewing exported video in the MOBOTIX HUB-format using the Desk Client Player, you now get an alternative way of viewing video, where the camera layout will automatically adapt according to the number of cameras playing simultaneously to maximize view size.

Changes and solved issues

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB VMS Products 2023 R1

As of 2023 R2 it is no longer possible to download DLNA from the HUB L5 installer page. DLNA 2023 R1 will be able to work with HUB L5 products 2023 R1 or older and won't be compatible with 2023 R2 or further versions.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Management Client 2023 R1

The Management Client now supports Windows scaling, which is useful when the Management Client runs on high-resolution monitors.

Changes compared to Recording Server 2023 R1

The startup time for Recording Server failover has been improved. Normal failover now starts up to 25% faster and hot standby failover starts up to 35% faster.

Changes compared to Log Server 2023 R1

The log server now uses the same certificate configuration as other services. This can be set during installation or from Server Configurator.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client 2023 R1

The MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client Player will now prompt the user to accept or decline sending anonymous usage data to measure and improve the performance of the application. The users choice will be saved for that Windows-user and will be valid for 6 months, after which the user will be prompted again.   Updated Export tab allows making Privacy Masks directly in the export tab instead of in a modal window.   Warning message regarding connecting to systems running without certificates for encryption now only shown once per operator per workstation if the operator chooses to save the choice made. The Desk Client will visualize status in the top right corner if connected to a system that is not running with certificates.   Updated timeline control for better visibility and navigation. Desk Client Profile settings allows for the timeline control to auto hide when shown in Monitor Wall views or normal views.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Web Client 2023 R1

Web Client displays an error message when a user attempts to download a pre-prepared Investigations download package, if that user doesn't have the permissions for export for one or more cameras in the Investigation. No download link is generated, and the user can't get to the prepare packages UI.

The Bookmark preview popup is introduced to allow users to preview and interact with Bookmarks from within the Timeline and the Views tab, without having to navigate to the Bookmarks tab. When opened, the Bookmark preview popup immediately starts playing the bookmark footage and will automatically loop it back from the start if it remains open.  The Add a detailed/ Edit bookmark dialogue is now redesigned with the new Timeline included. The new dialogue allows for timeline zoom to be adjusted by using the keyboard control and mouse wheel commands, as it works in Desk Client. Additionally, the brackets for selecting Bookmark Start, End and Bookmark event times have been redesigned and playback between the brackets automatically loops back to provide the user with confirmation that the selected clip between the brackets is the correct one.   A new date and time picker has been introduced to the Web Client timeline. It can be accessed in Playback expanded or collapsed mode and in Live – only in collapsed timeline mode. The redesigned date and time picker will for now only be accessible from the new Timeline in Views tab and provides a better user experience regardless of whether users prefer manually typing the date they would like to navigate to on the Timeline, or if they prefer to use the calendar controls.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Mobile  2023 R1

For Android and iOS users

Share live video:

Location on Pro Map:

To easily find and view video from the cameras closest to the user, they can now see their current location on the Map.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Mobile Server 2023 R1

Mobile server now checks if Management server has encryption enabled before enabling the Share service feature flag for Mobile Clients. If no encryption is detected Share service is unavailable and Mobile Clients will not display share options in their UI. Audit logging is enhanced for create, update, export and delete Investigations and Mobile server returns an error when unauthorized user attempts to download a prepared export package.
Updated MultiStream change command with the option to request previous or next frame per single camera provided to the command.

Version 2023 R1 of MOBOTIX HUB

Published on: 2023-04-26

To install the MOBOTIX HUB, please refer to the Sections System Requirements and Important notes on installing on Windows systems Important Notes for Installation on Windows Systems. The following applies to the names of the installation files described there:

Note: For more information about the features described below, see the program's online help.

New and improved features

Installation experience

Deploying MOBOTIX HUB VMS products with limited permissions on the SQL server

It is now possible to use pre-created databases during installation. This allows the MOBOTIX HUB VMS products to be installed with limited SQL permissions towards a managed on-prem database, instead of the previously required system administrator privileges. This option is currently available using the command line installer. A knowledge base article on the MOBOTIX website outlines this deployment method.

In addition, the process for changing the SQL connection strings has been streamlined for the four databases that VMS services use. They now exist as separate Windows registry keys that can be changed independently. This is typically needed if one or more databases are moved to a different SQL server. The Administrator Manual describes this process.

New Share service available to install alongside Management server

As of 2023 R1, we are releasing a first look at the Share service component. The Share service will be available to install as part of the Management server installer bundle and requires API GW also be installed, so the Mobile clients and server can consume it to generate and access links to bookmarks shared between operators. The new service requires encrypted connections to the Management server as it is only accessible via HTTPS.

Receive events from MOBOTIX HUB through webhooks

In MOBOTIX HUB 2023 R1 or later, rules in Management Client support the webhooks action. Create a webhook item in Management Client with the URL from any 3rd party service. Then, set up a rule to trigger it when an event happens in MOBOTIX HIUB. With webhooks, administrators are able to integrate with code-less platforms such as Zapier or IFTTT. It is simpler than ever to transform events happening in MOBOTIX HUB to SMS messages, calls, new tickets, Team messages, or even blinking lights. Administrators can use webhooks to send new events from MOBOTIX HUB to their own web server running on premises or on the cloud. For instance, a Next.js API running on Vercel, a Flask API or an AWS Lambda function.

Changes and solved issues

Changes to the installation process compared to MOBOTIX HUB VMS Products 2022 R3

The MOBOTIX HUB Management Server 2023 R1 is not able to communicate with Recording Servers versions 2019 R1 or older. If an installation has Recording Servers version 2019 R1 or older, then both Recording Servers and Management Server need to be updated to 2023 R1 to be operational. Once the Management Server is upgraded to 2023 R1, Recording Servers that are version 2019 R1 (or older) will be operating in offline mode until they are upgraded. It is possible to upgrade via an intermediate version to entirely avoid Recording Servers going offline. As of 2023 R1, the installation speed of the Management Client component is up to three times faster.

Note: For more information about the features described below, see the program's online help.

New and improved features

MOBOTIX HUB Plug In "Search Filter" now available from L2 version onwards

It is now possible to use the full range of search filters of the MOBOTIX HUB System (incl. the MOBOTIX HUB Plug-Ins (search filter) in the Desk Client search.

General improvements:

MOBOTIX HUB Management Client device search filter

It is now possible to search for devices in the recording server tree. Searches can be made on device name and IP address. In addition, all disabled devices are by default not shown in the device tree, but they can be displayed by ticking the checkbox in the search bar.

New in MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client 2022 R3

Updated visual elements and changes – to structure and workflows of some dialogs. The menu in the upper left corner has been restructured and the Login Information, Server Jobs and Evidence Lock are now separate dialogs.

The MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client now transmits telemetric data to MOBOTIX VMS with the purpose of optimizing the product. Data collected includes data on feature usage, errors / exceptions, and system configuration. All data is sent encrypted and pseudonymized. Telemetry can be turned off from the Management Client.

Changed behavior of Independent playback in the Desk Client has been modified – to make it more usable, when using independent playback to quickly check up on something witnessed in a particular video feed. Now when entering Independent Playback from Live mode, the video will skip back 10 seconds and automatically start playing. If Independent playback is entered from playback mode, while the video is playing forward the video will similarly skip back 10 seconds, while if the video is playing backwards the video will skip forward 10 seconds. If the video is stopped Independent playback mode will be entered, but no skip will take place.

Extended support for ONVIF Profile-M metadata in Vehicle and People categories. Also, People, Vehicle and Location are now available in more products.

Changes to availability of search agents in Centralized Search. Now all built-in search agents are available in all versions of MOBOTIX HUB with the exception of MOBOTIX HUB L1.

It is now possible to configure Home position for PTZ cameras.

New in MOBOTIX HUB Web Client 2022 R3

Left pane views/ devices navigation and search – to bring the Web Client look and feel closer to the Desk client, we have renewed the Live page navigation in the Web Client to have the left pane with all views, all camera view and all cameras tree below. The left pane can be expanded and collapsed and there is also the ability to search in both the views and the devices trees. Once the user has selected what he or she were searching for, up to 7 such search items can be kept in the recent search suggestions, so that the user can more easily find frequently used views/camera feeds.

Third-party IDP login – Users can now log into their Web Client with their preferred identity provider service. This option is however only available for secure, encrypted connections. If the Mobile server does not have an encryption certificate setup, the button for third party IDP will not appear on the Web Client login page.

Toast notifications for alarms raised – when an alarm or other event is raised, now the user is prompted to go to the alarms page with a toast notification within the Web Client. Similar events are grouped in the same toast message, to preserve screen real estate. Clicking on the toast message will bring the user to the Alarms tab in the Web Client, so they can see the alarm details and respond to it.

New in MOBOTIX HUB Mobile Client 2022 R3

For Android and iOS users
For Android users

Playback Timeline (“Time picker”) – the time picker has a new and simplified interface. For more information, see Using the playback timeline

New in MOBOTIX Mobile server 2022 R3

Removed requirement for firewall exception to allow ICMP ping to Management server from Mobile server installer. Now the Mobile server can be installed without requiring admins/ integrators to add this exception to the Management server firewall settings.

Added GDPR warning dialogue for enabling push notifications – the dialogue will appear when an admin enables Push notifications for Mobile clients to notify the user that enabling push notifications might make their installation non-GDPR compliant.
Browsers are now filtered out from the Notifications tab in the Mobile server node in Management client so that administrators will only see devices that are registered for notifications (In app and Push) and not be confused by the browser instances, as Web Client will only receive in-app notifications.

Improved bookmark search

A new option has been added to filter bookmark search for either headline or description text. This enables fewer and more accurate search results. The default to search both.

General improvements:

Duplicated hardware in the database may block an upgrade

It is possible, but rare, that hardware devices become duplicated in the database due to an error state in previous releases. If such duplicated hardware is detected during an upgrade, then the installer will first attempt to remove duplicates that are deemed safe to remove. If this is not possible for all duplicates, then the upgrade will be terminated, and MOBOTIX technical support needs to be contacted to manually remove duplicates.

Windows support

Windows Server 2022 is now supported. Support for Windows 8.1 has been removed.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB Management Client 2022 R1

The Matrix Monitor option under the Matrix node is deprecated and has been removed. When deleting an external IDP, the Management Client will now also automatically delete all users and registered claims associated with that external IDP.

Note: For more information about the features described below, see the program's online help.

New and improved features

Support for external identity providers and single sign-on.

You can now log in to the MOBOTIX HUB VMS using any external identity provider (IDP) that supports OAuth 2.0 and OIDC. Logging in using an external IDP is an alternative to logging in as an Active Directory user or a basic user. By using an external IDP, you can manage users without additional configuration in the HUB Management Client. You must use roles to configure detailed access permissions.
The external IDP can be set up to require multi-factor authentication. Logging in through an external IDP is currently supported by HUB Desk Client and HUB Management Client.
Users who log in through an external IDP are automatically added as basic users. Currently, you cannot use this feature with MOBOTIX HUB Federated Architecture.

General improvements:

Secure communication: Event and LPR servers.

To keep MOBOTIX HUB a secure product, features have been added to ensure that sensitive information is not disclosed. This feature protects personal sensitive information from disclosure and protects access to sensitive information.
The following changes have been made to MOBOTIX HUB. When upgrading existing installations, the LPR plugins (Desk Client and Management Client) MUST be upgraded to the latest version before enabling encryption on the Event Server and LPR server.

Changes compared to MOBOTIX HUB VMS 2021 R2.

The audit logs for changes to role permissions are more detailed. The logs now show both the old and new values when settings are changed.

Changes compared to Recording Server 2021 R2

The export function now has its own tab in MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client. Previously, the function was available in the export window. This provides the user with a larger workspace. In addition, frequently used functions have been made more accessible, while less frequently used functions have been grouped in a separate window. Also, the operator gets better feedback when adding video clips to the export list. All of this translates into an improved workflow with focus on what's when exporting. When MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client is running as part of a remote desktop session, the operator is notified. This information is important because hardware decoding of video in remote desktop sessions is not possible. Desktop sessions is not possible and - possibly - the CPU load is higher, which in some cases may result in a worse user experience.
The MOBOTIX HUB 2022 R1 release will be the last to support 32-bit operating systems for the Desk Client, and Windows 8.1 will be removed from the list of supported operating systems. In some cases, the audio was unnecessarily delayed compared to the video. The issue has been fixed so that audio and video are better aligned.

Bookmark functions in Web Client and mobile Clients

Bookmark functionality has been added to the web client and to the mobile clients. Users can now add and edit bookmarks from the Web Client in a way similar to the Desk Client. Quick bookmarks can be added in Live and grid. Detailed bookmarks can be added in Single camera Playback. The bookmark headline, description and start, event and end times can be edited. Users can also search for bookmarks via the Bookmarks tab. It is possible to filter by "My Bookmarks" and then see the details and play the selected bookmark.

Improvements in the Management Client

Improvements in the Recording Server

Changes have been made in the Recording Server and the media database to reduce startup time after an uncontrolled shutdown of the service. Previously a directory scan was needed to rebuild information about tables in the media database.
This has been changed by introducing a small SQL database containing information about all the tables. Table information can be restored from this database in most cases after an uncontrolled shutdown. The small SQL database is implemented using SQLite and no additional components are needed on the Re-cording Server. The SQLite database files are stored in %PROGRAMDATA%\MOBOTIX HUB and it is recommended that this folder is excluded from anti-virus scanning.

Changes in the Desk Client

The following improvements have been implemented in this application:

XProtect LPR

MOBOTIX HUB LPR 2021 R1 introduces these new country modules

In the current LPR implementation, the performance of an individual LPR server is affected by the number of active country modules installed on the individual LPR server. For the region of Europe, MOBOTIX' unofficial recommendation is to not activate more than five country modules per LPR Server to maintain system performance. In other regions, such as the Middle East region, this recommendation does not apply.

In use cases where recognition of vehicles from a wide set of countries is required, for example boarder control, it is recommended to use the generic modules, such as the EU Generic Module. These modules are specialized in recognizing the most common types of license plates across the various EU countries.

To cover countries that are not covered by the EU Generic Module, we have now created an Eastern Europe Generic Module which covers an additional nine countries:

Resolved issues

Active Directory Synchronization

Since the MOBOTIX HUB release 2020 R3 it has been identified that synchronization between AD and the VMS did not correctly resolve nesting of user groups across different domains. In 2021 R2 those issues have been fixed and resolving user groups now works across all the domains under transitive trust relationship. For all non-transitive trusts the process will only resolve members of the trusted domain.

Known Limitations

The following limitations currently apply to version 2021 R2.

New and improved features

Note: For more information about the features described below, see the program's online help.

Licensing per activated channel

MOBOTIX HUB VMS products 2021 R1 introduce an improvement in the licensing model allowing more enabled channels per device than previously. Some devices now require one device license per enabled channel. The license requirements for a device can be found in the document "List of supported devices" on the MOBOTIX web page in the section Support > Download Center > Marketing & Documentation > Video Management Systems > MOBOTIX HUB.

When installing 2021 R1, a warning will be shown if the amount of device licenses used by the system will be affected by the improvement in licensing. In this case, the warning provides a link to a report including those devices which will require more than 1 device license. The warning also provides an option to cancel the installation.

Increased number of supported device channels

The number of supported device channels has increased from 16 channels to 512 channels for the ONVIF driver, from 64 channels to 512 channels for the Universal Drivers, and from 1 channel to unlimited number of channels for the MIP Driver Framework.
ONVIF driver update
The current ONVIF (one-channel) driver has been modified to support up to 512 channels per device. This means that all ONVIF conformant devices can be added to the system with the existing ONVIF driver effective of MOBOTIX HUB version 2021 R1 and later, regardless of the number of channels. For MOBOTIX HUB versions released before 2021 R1, the ONVIF driver will still support 1-channel devices only.
The current ONVIF16 (16-channels) driver has not been changed. It will remain in the upcoming Driver Device Packs for backward compatibility but will no longer be updated with new functionality.
Universal driver update
A new Universal512 driver is now available, supporting devices with up to 512 channels.

Change in administration and functionality of basic user accounts

User management for the concept of basic users has been changed. When a HUB system administrator creates a new basic user, a temporary password is set. It is recommended that the administrator checks the box "Force basic user to change password on next login". The following applies to the registration process and the parameters:

When logging into a MOBOTIX HUB system, you may see a warning stating that the system is not secure. Because this release is about securing the communication between system components, the client applications consider any system without a certificate non-secure. This also includes any previous version, for example if you are using the latest version of MOBOTIX HUB Desk Client with a previous version of the MOBOTIX HUB system

Device firmware update using the Management Client

It is now possible to update device firmware through the Management Client. This new feature allows you to update the firmware for a single device only or for several devices of the same brand/model together. There is a new wizard for bulk firmware update available in the Maintenance menu of the Management Client.
The new feature makes it easier for the VMS administrators to maintain the latest device firmware when a new firmware is available. This feature is available in the following system versions and for the following device drivers:

Note: This feature also depends on the current firmware version of the device. Some old versions do not support a firmware update from MOBOTIX HUB.

Media database repair improvements

Improving the stability of the media database is an ongoing process. In this release, we have improved the repair time for a corrupted media database.

By moving detailed information from low-level index files to higher-level files, we have limited the number of files we need to read to repair the database, thereby significantly reducing the repair time. The time saved depends on the size of the database and the location where the files are located, but we saved up to 50% time in our tests.

The following is an example of a test performed:

A media database on a local disk with 100,000 corrupted tables showed the following results:

In this case, we saw a 46% improvement in repair time compared to previous versions

Specific features for MOBOTIX IoT cameras

Note: For additional information about the features described in the following, please see the application's online help.

Dynamic events

After the integration of MOBOTIX cameras of the series MOBOTIX 7, Mx6 and P3 via a device-specific MOBOTIX driver (selection from Mobotix M/D/V/S series, Mobotix Q*, Mobotix T*), events of these cameras from the following event groups can also be defined in the HUB Management Client for these cameras as ("dynamic") events:

The events defined in the MOBOTIX HUB can then be used in Rules and Alarms, for example to start recording through the HUB Recording Server.

In the MOBOTIX HUB variants L4 and L5, the HUB Desk Client Search dialog allows to search for recordings of such events by entering MOBOTIX IoT Events as a search filter.

Note: This special search function of the Desk Client requires a MOBOTIX HUB variant L4 or L5..

In order for the events of a MOBOTIX IoT camera to be used as "dynamic events"
in the MOBOTIX HUB, the following preparations are necessary on the IoT camera before  inserting it into MOBOTIX HUB:

Analytics Events from MOBOTIX 7 Cameras

After integrating a camera from the MOBOTIX 7 model series via a device-specific MOBOTIX driver (selection Mobotix M/D/V/S series), events of a Vaxtor LPR App activated on the camera for the detection of license plates, can be defined as Analytics Events in the MOBOTIX HUB and can also be used within Rules and Alarms, e.g. to start a recording.

In order for the events of the Vaxtor LPR App to be used in the HUB, the following settings must be made in the Milestone section of the  Vaxtor LPR Settings dialog to configure the App:

After integrating a camera configured in this way, the corresponding Analytics Event can then be activated in the HUB Management Client as follows:

Then, this Analytics Event can be used just like any other event within Rules and Alarms.

After installing an extension of the HUB Desk Client using the installation file 'MOBOTIX_HUB_Plug-Ins_2020_R3_Installer.exe', the Search dialog of the Desk Client then displays an additional search area VaxALPR,  which allows the search for a specific licence plate recognized by the app. By displaying this search area multiple times, it is also possible to search for several licence plates at the same time.

Note: This special search function of the Desk Client requires a MOBOTIX HUB variant L4 or L5..
